Title: Reaching for One Billion
Snippet: Money is the driving force behind all genealogy-related material on the Internet. Why else would anyone spend hours transcribing records and researching information only to freely post it for the public?
Well, of course, there are companies out there that are in it only for the money, but there are many websites that are not driven by profit. They can and do, however, generate income from ads, donations and services. Still many sites are designed to provide information to researchers for free.
With no income generated from information, large websites can’t afford to have genealogists, researchers and transcribers on staff. They instead depend on volunteers.
