Column: Ask Now or Forever Be Left Unknowing

Between today and Saturday, my genealogy column, Roots to the Past, is available in the following Atlantic Canada newspapers:

Tuesday: The Lunenburg County Progress Bulletin

Tuesday: The Kings County Record (Sussex)

Wednesday: Journal-Pioneer (Summerside)

Thursday: The Western Star (Corner Brook)

Saturday: The Citizen (Amherst)

Saturday: Times & Transcript (Moncton)

This week only: The same column under the title “Headstones in the Forest at Ship Cove” is available in The Southern Gazette, Marystown, Newfoundland on Wednesday January 25th.

Title: Ask Now or Forever Be Left Unknowing

Snippet: I last visited Newfoundland in the summer of 2008. It was Mom’s farewell tour. In her advanced years, she believed it would be her final visit to the province she spent the first seventeen years of her life living in.

Besides wanting Mom to see her Newfoundland family again, one of the reasons I wanted to explore her old stomping grounds with her was to rekindle memories of relatives, where they were buried, where they attended church and school and where they lived. Having visited the island only two other times – before I actually delved into genealogy – I had no feel for the lay of the land and where her people came from.
